Gulmarg, often called the “Meadow of Flowers,” is a breathtaking hill station and a renowned skiing destination in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated in the Pir Panjal Range, it’s famous for its stunning natural beauty, especially its rolling green meadows in summer and snow-covered slopes in winter.

Key Attractions & Things to Do:

• Gulmarg Gondola: This is undoubtedly the most iconic attraction. It’s one of the highest and longest cable car rides in the world. It operates in two phases:
  • Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori): Takes you to an altitude of 8,530 ft, offering panoramic views of the valley.
  • Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak): Ascends further to 12,293 ft, leading to the Apharwat Peak, which is a major hub for skiing and stunning views of the Himalayas. There’s also a chairlift from Kongdoori to Mary’s Shoulder for skiers.
  • Note: It’s highly recommended to book Gondola tickets online in advance, as queues can be long. Its operation is subject to weather conditions.
• Apharwat Peak: The summit reached by the second phase of the Gondola, offering spectacular views and excellent skiing opportunities.
• Alpather Lake (Frozen Lake): A picturesque high-altitude lake located at the base of Apharwat Peak, about 13 km from Gulmarg. It remains frozen from November to June, earning it the nickname “Frozen Lake.” It’s a popular spot for trekking and photography.
• Gulmarg Golf Course: Situated at an altitude of 2,650 meters, it is the highest green golf course in the world and an 18-hole course.
• Strawberry Valley: A beautiful valley that comes alive with blooming strawberries from April to September, offering a vibrant and picturesque landscape. It’s great for picnics and nature walks.
• St. Mary’s Church: A charming 110-year-old Victorian-style church with grey stone walls and a green roof, a historical and architectural gem.
• Khilanmarg: A scenic meadow offering breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and vibrant alpine flowers. It’s a popular spot for photography and horse riding.
• Shrine of Baba Reshi: A 13th-century Sufi shrine dedicated to Saint Baba Payamuddin Reshi, known for its intricate Kashmiri craftsmanship.
• Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve: Spread over 180 sq. km, this reserve is home to various endangered and protected species of flora and fauna, making it ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
• Durung Waterfall: A beautiful natural waterfall nestled amidst lush greenery, a tranquil spot for nature enthusiasts.
• Maharani Temple: A unique Hindu temple in the heart of Gulmarg, where the ceremonies are performed by a Muslim priest, symbolizing cultural harmony.
